Spray foam insulation can be categorized into two different types: open cell and closed cell.

Open Cell Foam Insulation

Open Cell Foam Insulation is a very good air barrier that is used for interior walls because it provides sound reduction. However because it does not provide water vapor barrier, it is not recommended for outdoor applications.

Closed Cell Foam Insulation

Closed Cell Foam Insulation provides both air and water vapor barrier. You will oftentimes find closed cell in roofing projects or outdoor applications.

Spray foam is generally regarded as safe and non-toxic once it is cured. However there are some health risks to the workers as they are applying the wet, aerosal form of the foam. It is important to hire a contractor who has the proper training and necessary safety equipment to apply spray the foam.

Also as spray foam expands, it will apply pressure to the walls and ceilings of the structure. It’s important to have a skilled contractor properly and evenly spray the application to avoid any structural problems.
